Getting Involved
How would you like to join our group of volunteers and help make Galleon's next show as good as our last, and have a great time doing it?
There are so many roles required to bring the show together and we are confident your skills can be used, and that you will develop new ones.
Age is no barrier to participation. Our shows have had people from 7 to 80+ lending a hand.

Preproduction
The following roles are required to get the show into the theatre:
Costumes
- create the look of each character by designing clothes and accessories the actors will wear in performance to reflect the personalities of the characters in the script
- have fun hunting through Op Shops for the perfect costume
Director
- collaborate with a team of creative individuals, coordinating research, stagecraft, costume design, props, lighting design, acting, set design and sound design for the production
- be the primary visionary, making decisions about the artistic concept and interpretation of the text and its staging
- lead the team and create your artistic vision of the play
- Galleon prefers you to have prior experience as a director, but we are also happy to work with novice directors
Poster
- design the poster to depict the play. It will be professionally printed and distributed across the world!
Program
- design the program which is sold at each performance as the memento of the production
- liaise with a commercial printer to get it ready for press
Properties
- research and acquire props for each production in liaison with the Director and actors during the rehearsal period.
- be part of the backstage crew at the theatre during the production to manage the use of props and monitor continuity
Set design and construction
- practise your design, wall painting and carpentry skills
Set dressing
- make the physical set look fabulous and appropriate to the production
- practise your decorating skills
Backstage
The following roles are required to assist in the running of the show in the theatre:
- Backstage Crew
- keep the actors in line (said with tongue firmly planted inside cheek!) and the play running smoothly - it's a different view of the action
- help get actors on stage at the right time
- manage scene changes
- Hair and makeup
- prepare the actors to show their best side to the audience
- do touch-ups during performances to keep actors looking good!
- Lighting
- create a lighting design that goes with the show's mood and the director's vision
- help the theatre technician rig and focus the lamps during bump-in
- operate the lighting board during performances
- Sound design and operation
- plan and provide the sound effects in the play
- liaise with APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) to ensure we are licensed to use music/songs
- Stage Manager

provides practical and organisational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production process
- attend all rehearsals and help the director to manage rehearsals
- manage the actual performances in the theatre. Nothing happens without the SM's knowledge and approval once the show is in performance!
Front of House
The following roles are required to assist in getting the audience into the theatre and enhancing their experience:
- Front of House Manager
- keep your cool as a hundred plus people descend on the theatre and your team gets them all seated in time; and then refreshed during the interval
- trouble shoot problems
- liaise with the Stage Manager
- Program seller
- make sure all patrons have the opportunity to find out about the show by encouraging them to purchase a program
- Raffle seller
- practise your retail and marketing skills as you sell raffle tickets
- raffle ticket sales are an important source of income to Galleon
- Sherry
- ensure that our patrons enjoy our complimentary sherry
- talk to them about the products on offer
- Usher
- keep fit as you show the patrons to their seats (you need to go up and down stairs!)
Administrative Roles
The following roles are required to assist the overall running of the group:
- President
- set the strategic direction for Galleon
- plan and run committee meetings and ensure the smooth running of Galleon
- liaise with other theatre groups and public entities
- Secretary
- manage all correspondence
- keep minutes of all committee meetings
- Treasurer
- Vice-President
- assist the President wherever possible
- Publicity
- practise your marketing skills as you inform Adelaide of Galleon's next great production
- Committee Member
- help out as needed and provide suggestions and support for the group
- Web Master
- keep the web site current and encourage input on the design and content from everyone
